What will the Arctic look like in 2040?

Ahead of the Arctic Futures Symposium in early December 2025, graduate students from across Europe gathered in Brussels for the Arctic Investment Scenarios Workshop, exploring possible investment pathways for the European Arctic toward 2040. The participants were mainly from Europe, but also from the US and Canada. The Arctic Business North project, together with the International Polar Foundation, the North Norway European Office and the Brussels School of Governance, organized the event.

The workshop opened with Dr Andrey Mineev, who presented the current Arctic investment landscape and the scenario methodology.

Dr Alina Kovalenko followed with insights into Arctic shipping, showing how climate change and geopolitics are reshaping the sector. 

Student-developed scenarios were later discussed on stage at the Arctic Future Symposium by an expert panel. The presentation is available on YouTube (from 2:14):
